Welcome to 2012

Firstly I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year, and I hope you all had a very enjoyable Christmas too!

Unlike last year I decided to work the week in between Christmas and New Year to see if I was missing anything from last year (I had the whole week off and it felt very luxurious!). Up until about 2weeks before Christmas it was all looking very quiet, and I felt good in that I probably hadnt missed a great opportunity at the end of 2010.......but how wrong I was! By time Christmas Eve rolled round I had a full week, not a single appointment slot free, and people still ringing up or emailing for prospective slots!
So firstly a huge thank you to all the patients I saw last week, who took time out from thier celebrations to come to see me for a massage. Hope you all felt better by the end of the week, ready and raring to go for the new year ahead.

And what a new year it will be too. It looks like I am going to get a holiday to Japan in this year (only a week) at the time of the Black Ship Festival in Shimoda, and I am being told to expect a camping holiday bonanza this year as well! It appears as though last years 2 trips were a great success - so if anyone has any good ideas for great camping holiday spots - preferably in or near woods, then please drop me an email and let me know.

As always, if you want to know more about me or Remedial Massage, please have a look at my website at www.yorkremedialtherapies.co.uk

And so Autumn arrives

These last couple of weeks have been a busy and noisy time for the clinic. We have had a number of contractors at the clinic doing a range of repair works to the roof, chimney and wooden structures around my clinic room bay window.
So, firstly a huge thank you to John (and his team) and Bill for doing such a great job! Thanks also to all you who put up with the noise. It is now all finished, and the clinic is in a much better condition for it.

We are also working on a clinic newsletter to come out later this month. It will have a wide range of information in it – and if it is successfully received will be something that we look to do again (next year…..).  As with all great ideas, it is suffering one simple issue………my spelling and handwriting! It seems that street names are not always spelt the way that I thought they would be, and so getting the postcodes (yes, the history-taking form has now been changed to capture these) is a little more time consuming than I first thought. Ah well, all good experience and learning to make sure that I don’t carry these mistakes on into my second full-time year ……at least that is the idea! Lol

Finally, as we are still just  in October it is worth keeping a close eye on ourselves (and friends and relatives) to ensure that we are not suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affected Disorder). It is said that this affects about 5% of the UK population, and can account for symptoms such as sleep problems, depression, a lowered tolerance to stress and mood changes. It is suspected that these changes to the body are caused from a drop in natural light exposure, which directly affects the body’s ability to balance its levels of serotonin and melatonin.
So to battle this problem there are a few simple steps that we can take. Firstly, “get out more!” This is most important for people working indoors for most of the day. Best advice is to make sure that you take a 30min (or so) walk at lunch time – to get you away from the computer (that will do your posture no good) and get you some natural sunlight that your body might be craving. Also walking has proven itself in numerous studies to help with a myriad of other health benefits – from reduced blood pressure, improved cholesterol levels, better bone strength and even reducing risk of developing diabetes or breast cancer! In fact it is recommended that you try 3 brisk walks a week to get the most out of walking. If however you develop any knee / hip / ankle pains then you should see your doctor………or if you are a patient of mine, then remember that you can give me a call anytime to discuss! Lastly, with regards to food, it is advised that you try to get as much omega 3 into your diet as possible – so fish, flax seeds, or even supplements!

Congratulations!

It would be fair to say that so far my blogging attempts have been less than impressive....in fact downright useless. But I am hoping to change that from now, and have tabled some time into the diary so that I can update regular news on this blog to let everyone know what is happening at York Remedial Therapies at the moment.

So, without further ado, my first shout out needs to go to Laura Makin!
She came to York Remedial Therapies back in March, struggling with bike rides over 50miles in distance – and having already signed up for the London to Paris bike ride in June (500km in 4days) she knew that she needed to do something to get her body performing to the levels needed for this Charity challenge. With a structured programme of exercises, advice on training strategies, and some basic “do’s and don’ts” Laura completed the challenge in smooth style. In fact, the week before the challenge she decided to do a 120mile bike ride from York to Filey and back just to prove that she was ready! So in the space of just 4months she went from struggling to do 50mile rides, to finding that anything less was just not worth it. Well done Laura! I hear that next year it’s going to be either a triathlon, or a jungle trek up Machu Pichu?

Next shout goes to Paul!
Our very own running star, who has also just completed the Jane Tomlinson 10k race in York in a personal best time of under 47mins. Paul joined us in April with serious ITB and quads pains kicking in at the 2 to 3mile mark. Obviously this was going to be a problem for running a 10k race, but like Laura he has turned around his training regieme, worked hard at the stretches and exercises we gave him, and in the space of just 3months can now comfortably run not only further than before, but with a better stride and importantly it is pain free.

Well done both of you!

Hamylnn Health Christmas Lunch

This time of year seems to come around to fast.......but when it involves good food, and a glass of wine, well I can hardly complain.

This year it was decided that we (the therapists working at Hamylnn Health) would all go to Le Langhe in York. I had never been there before, but Ed Jowitt (physio) recommended it, and it had a good write up, so we booked a table for 1:30 in the afternoon. In the end there were 4 of us from Hamylnn Health, and only Phil (the chiropracter) was unable to join us.

So wondering in through the door, at almost precisely 1:30 was myself, Ed, Gill (reflexologist) and Lynn (clinic owner and fellow remedial massage therapist). The first thing that struck me was the wonderful aroma of cheeses that bombards your taste and smell senses all at once. Looking around, it was clear to see why. They have a large cheese counter by the door - selling all the sorts of cheeses that you would never find in your local supermarket, but each one a speciality in its own right. Behind the cheese counter you can also see a range of meats, salamis and prosciutto hams (or at least ones that look like them..... ).

We were shown upstairs straight away, and got seated right next to the dessert table (and for a dessert fan, this was a definate plus). The menu that they have is well stocked, although it appears, at first, to lack much in the way of detail. Things like "Meat main", or "Game main" were on the menu without any explanation as to what they were. All was made clear when the waitress came round to the table, and rattled of a number of different soups, meat dishes and the such.

Being a red meat lover I ordered the deer, and I can honestly say that it was GORGEOUS! Well cooked, succulent, and full of flavour. What could have been better for a Christmas meal? This was promptly rounded off with a lovely chocolate tart, and an Americano coffee.

First Blog

Welcome everyone, and thank you for visiting my blog. I am very new at this, so please forgive me if it takes a little while to get into the swing of things.
I suppose I should start off with saying a little about why I have started this blog. I wanted a space where I could update people with current information on any deals that we have going, events that we are planning on attending and to give people a space to find out a little more about what we are all about.

So, I suppose I should start off with letting everyone know that I have a website coming soon, and (fingers crossed) it should be live before Christmas, so watch this space and I will shout when its live!

It has all the details on what we do, what Remedial Massage is all about, and where we are. Of course, if you cant wait, then please by all means drop me a line (my email is in my profile) and I will answer any questions to the best of my ability.
